British U21 Final @ Lakeside - 25.04.08

Lee took part in the British U21 final at Lakeside on Friday night after winning the Weymouth qualifier with maximum points a few weeks ago. It was a strong field at a fairly neutral track with only a handful of riders having ridden the track before hand. Lee Struggled early on only scoring just two points from his first three rides before switching bikes. He then secured two 2nd places ending the night on 6 points. Lee was a little disappointed after producing such great form over the last few weeks. However he is determined to not let this one meeting affect him and will carry on where he left off for Birmingham.

Birmingham v Glasgow - 23.04.08

The Brummies took on the Glasgow Tigers at Perry barr on Wednesday night in the return leg of their Knock Out Cup tie. It was a great meeting to watch but a very tense one for the Brummies faithful as they watched their side loose 47-43. However the Brummies still progress into the next round due to the 12 point win up in Scotland on Sunday. The Brummies new signing failed to score on his debut and with Jack Hargreaves having an off night it was left to the main body of the team to cary them through.

Lee had a good night with paid 7. A Good return from the number two position and a good way to head into the British U21 Final on Friday at Lakeside.

Glasgow v Birmingham - 20.04.08

Glasgow played host to the Brummies in the first leg of their Knock Out Cup tie. The Brummies proved to strong for the Tigers winning 52 - 40 in a thrilling meeting. Everyone was amongst the scorers with only Jack Hargreaves having an of day but his fellow reserve and Brummies official number 8 Jack Roberts continued his great form that he keeps showing when stepping in to replace riders.

Lee had a good day with 8 points from four rides from the number 2 position. This was an excellent way to bounce back after Friday night in Somerset where Lee was disappointed with his score.

Birmingham v Somerset - 16.04.08 - Postponed

Tractor problems and overnight rain was the reason for this abandonment. The Overnight rain had left the track very wet and it was still to wet to race on around 6pm. So the tractor started to move the wet sloppy shale from the inside when the clutch seized at around 8pm meaning no more track work could be done thus having to cancel the meeting.

Mildenhall v Birmingham – 06.04.08

The Brummies claimed a win at Mildenhall on Sunday but there weren’t too many celebrations due to loosing Phil Morris and Jason Lyons in nasty crashes. This ends a bad week for their Brummies after loosing their number 1 and 2 on Wednesday and now their number 3 and 5.

The Brummies were strong throughout and were sitting on a comfortable lead when they lost Lyons in a nasty 1st bend pile up which caused him to withdraw with concussion and an arm injury.

Only one heat later saw another nasty crash which drew a close to the meeting. Hargreaves made a good start and Laukannen clipped his rear wheel and straightened causing him to run into Morris and Wortman sending them into the fence with bikes and bodies everywhere. Morris and Wortman were lucky not to go over the fence and landed heavily on track. Morris and Wortman were taken to hospital with Morris suffering with a suspected punctured lung broken ribs and wrist and Wortman with a broken pelvis, thigh injury and internal injuries.

Lee however escaped most of the carnage only being involved in one 1st bend crash but walked away ok with only minor burns to his backside. He had a really good afternoon notching paid 11 from six rides winning 2 of his heats.

Our best wishes go out to all the riders injured at Mildenhall and also to the other two Brummies riders injured during the week.

Birmingham v Rye House – 02.04.08

The Brummies faced the Rye House Rockets at Perry Barr on Wednesday night. It was a match full of thrills and spills which ended in a home win. The Brummies lost number 1 Kyle Legault and number 2 James Birkinshaw in a nasty looking crash which resulted in Legault fracturing his femur after he fell and Birkinshaw had nowhere to go but over his team mate.

Lee had a good night but it didn’t start well as he had two races under his belt and no points. He then switched bikes and that seemed to do the trick as he then reeled off two heat wins and a paid second from his five remaining rides.

Rye House v Mildenhall (Guest) – 24.03.08

After an Easter weekend full of rain offs Smarty managed to finally get some racing under his belt as a guest for the Mildenhall Barmy Army Fen Tigers.

The Rye Track had not totally escaped the rain which made the opening heats a little tricky however the track did improve and dry out as the meeting progressed. Lee had one fall whilst in second place in heat 4 on the last turn of the race. Lee made up for the fall by winning heat 8 in fine style ahead of the Rockets pairing. Lee finished up on 4 points but was unlucky not to have scored more in one of his best meetings at Hoddeston.

Press Day Goes Well

The Brummies team met up for a team bonding session before the annual Press and Practice day. The team seemed to get on well and a good team spirit was formed.

Press day saw all the riders have lots of photos before taking to the track for some practice. Everything went well with all the riders looking in good form. Lee was looking smooth and fast as he prepares for his first meeting on Sunday in the Alan Hunt Memorial Trophy. It will be a good run out against a very strong looking line up.

Brummies Team Practice

Practice has been going well in recent weeks for Lee as he gets up to speed ready for the season start in a few weeks time. Lee will be heading to Birmingham tomorrow (Wednesday 5th) for a team practice. This will be an ideal time for him to get to know his team mates and also to get dialled in at his home track.

Lee has been busy building up two new machines in anticipation for the new campaign and is looking to make a big impact this year at reserve for the Brummies. He Said “This year is my second season for the Brummies, I made a good improvement last season on my average. I’m looking to carry on where I left off and push for a 2nd string berth as the season goes on. Birmingham’s a great club to be at as the management and supporters are the best in the league and it will be nice to see everyone again.”

Smarty Seals the Deal!!

Lee Smart has been named as one of the Brummies reserves for 2008 season coming in on an average just above 4 points per meeting. Lee is pleased to be back at Perry Barr for the second successive year and feels its a big year to come for him and the team.

"I'm very pleased to be back for a second year running as it's a great track with superb fans! It's going to be a big year for me personally and for the team as we look strong on paper. I improved a lot last season especially near the end, so i want to carry on improving like that and aim at claiming a second string spot during the season. I'm working hard now to build up the best bikes i can and also i'm making sure I'm as fit as possible by going to the gym so i can start off the season as i mean to go on" said Lee enthusiastically as he looks forward to the year ahead.
